Joel has been actively dancing for sixteen years. Being introduced in a summer musical theatre class in British Columbia, he was hooked. Initially participating in tap, he added Jazz and Musical Theatre to his curriculum. Early in his artistic career, he competed in many competitions including the Canadian Nationals, where he placed first in Regional's for a Character Duo
Upon relocating to Nova Scotia, Joel continued on with dance carrying on with Tap and Jazz classes, he also added Ballet and Traditional Step Dancing to his dance portfolio. He competed in a multitude of BATD (British Association of Teachers of Dance) festivals, with numerous first place wins in both Step Dance and tap. Joel also achieved honors on many exams including Blue Ribband for Tap (the BATD Award for Step Dance), and gold for jazz.
Joel joined “Amethyst”, a Celtic Step Dance/Highland performing group with whom he made appearances throughout the province. He also joined “Footnotes”, another Dance Troupe which made regular public appearances, attended festivals and Dance workshops throughout the Maritimes. Some of these workshops were personally instructed by Al Gilbert who provides his own dance syllabus worldwide.
“Footnotes” auditioned for and was accepted to perform in Walt Disney World. This was an experience of a lifetime for all, and Joel had the privilege of performing a Step Dance solo.
Joel made frequent appearances in the Halifax International Tattoo. His costuming included the Little Drummer Boy, Jack Be Nimble, a Rooster, a Fantasy Character, and a traditional Step Dancer.
Besides dance, Joel is a seasoned guitarist. He has recorded music with various bands and on his own.
Joel has enjoyed working with children as a Camp Counselor in the past and his artistic experience has evolved with travel across Canada and Europe.
Joel has been a student at Studio One since 2002 and is both excited and honored to be a part of the staff.
